Dental Implants

Dental implants are artificial teeth that are secured and stabilized in place with tiny titanium posts that are surgically placed into your jawbone. The restorative artificial crown is permanently attached to this post, or artificial root, with an abutment, or an extension.

Sometimes damage to your teeth requires simple, cosmetic solutions. If you have a small chip or crack, you just need dental bonding. If you have experienced severe damage or decay, you may need to have your tooth removed. You could also have an accident that knocks a tooth out, requiring you to replace it. Whatever the reason, if you do have a gap where a tooth is missing, you should consider having it replaced. The new gold standard has become the dental implant.

Your compassionate team at Georgetown Periodontics & Implant Dentistry is wholly committed to providing you, your family, and every patient with comprehensive periodontal care that improves your oral health and daily function. Dental Implants and Implant Restoration Services

About fifty million Americans experience the loss of a tooth every year. Dentures and dental bridges have traditionally been the solution in these situations, but dental implants are growing in popularity quickly.

Dental implants placed by the team at Georgetown Periodontics & Implant Dentistry offer significant benefits:

  • Structural Integrity- By filling in a gap, a dental implant preserves the integrity of the jawbone, and it also reduces the risk of developing infections. The artificial root stops the atrophy.
  • Improved Aesthetics- Dental implants restore the appearance of your smile and your natural jawline and prevent changes in the shape of your face that can develop with missing teeth.
  • Oral Health- Having a dental implant placed improves your ability and likelihood to brush and floss daily, which results in improved overall oral health.
  • Upgrade from Dentures- Since the tiny titanium post functions like an artificial root, fused and bonded to the jawbone, dental implants are stable, secure, and permanent, which improves your ability to chew foods and speak normally.
  • Tooth Migration- When a tooth is gone, the neighboring teeth will immediately shift into the gap, affecting your bite alignment.
  • Neighboring teeth- Unlike a traditional dental bridge, the neighboring teeth are not used for support.

The Dental Implant Process

Receiving a dental implant usually has several steps and will take more than one visit to Georgetown Periodontics & Implant Dentistry, and a few months to successfully complete.

The first step is an X-ray to identify if your jawbone has enough density and mass to support the titanium implant. If you still need a tooth extracted, that must be completed first. If it is confirmed that your jawbone needs more density, a simple bone graft will be introduced. A common and painless process, it simply adds a little time to the treatment. When it is time for the implant placement, the team at Georgetown Periodontics & Implant Dentistry will administer a local anesthetic to the immediate area and then surgically place the tiny post in your jawbone. It will take a few months for the post to naturally bond and fuse to the jawbone. Once we have determined that it is secured, an abutment or extension is added to the top of the post to reach the gumline, and then an artificial crown is added. With that, you have a tooth replacement that looks, feels, and functions naturally.

Proper Care Improves Longevity of Dental Implants

Following your dental implant procedure, the healing process typically takes several weeks. During this time, Georgetown Periodontics & Implant Dentistry will recommend that you maintain a soft-food diet and reintroduce harder foods as the tenderness diminishes. If your dental implant was placed because of a sports injury, it is wise to consider wearing a mouth guard to prevent it from happening again.

The most important thing to do to extend the life expectancy of your implant is to practice sound oral hygiene habits daily.

The health industry suggests that you brush twice daily and practice proper brushing technique. It is also beneficial to floss at least once a day.

Be aware of your diet. One of the best efforts in exercising preventative dental care is to avoid food that is high in sugar or starch. If you enjoy soda, use a straw to limit exposure to your teeth. It is also beneficial to rinse your mouth with water following meals to dislodge food remnants.

Schedule consistent, preventative dental exams at Georgetown Periodontics & Implant Dentistry. Dental issues left unchecked can result in the progression of decay and additional issues, which is why it is important to visit us every six months. In addition to providing a thorough checkup and exam, we will also professionally clean your teeth, identify any potential issues, and monitor the status of your dental implant.
