The Dental Implant Process
Receiving a dental implant usually has several steps and will take more than one visit to Georgetown Periodontics & Implant Dentistry, and a few months to successfully complete.
The first step is an X-ray to identify if your jawbone has enough density and mass to support the titanium implant. If you still need a tooth extracted, that must be completed first. If it is confirmed that your jawbone needs more density, a simple bone graft will be introduced. A common and painless process, it simply adds a little time to the treatment. When it is time for the implant placement, the team at Georgetown Periodontics & Implant Dentistry will administer a local anesthetic to the immediate area and then surgically place the tiny post in your jawbone. It will take a few months for the post to naturally bond and fuse to the jawbone. Once we have determined that it is secured, an abutment or extension is added to the top of the post to reach the gumline, and then an artificial crown is added. With that, you have a tooth replacement that looks, feels, and functions naturally.
